The following data was extracted from a National Research Council study titled Research-Doctorate
Programs in the United States: Continuity and Change (Appendix Table F-1, pp. 133-134).
CS Adjusted Response Rate:
Number of institutions with CS programs included in the study: 107
Number of CS programs reviewed: 108
Number of individuals in CS who were selected as raters: 432
Number of individuals considered qualified raters1: 414
Number of completed questionnaires returned by individuals originally identified as raters: 220
Number of usable questionnaires used to calculate "program rating"2: 221
Percentage of usable rater responses after the rater pool was adjusted: 53%Nonrespondents:
Number of questionnaires for which no response was received and no reason is known for the
non-response: 166
Some faculty (27) offered the following reasons for not responding:
- The questionnaire was lost and a replacement questionnaire was not returned: 1
- Faculty member was not available, i.e. on leave or out of the country: 12
- Faculty member refused to complete the questionnaire: 6
- Faculty member did not have the time to complete the questionnaire: 5
- Questionnaire was returned with no information and no explanation: 3
- Reason for not completing the questionnaire was different from any of the above: 0
Footnotes
1. This number is the difference between the number of individuals who were originally sent
questionnaires and the number of individuals identified as being improperly selected for the rater pool,
either as a result of: an incorrect address, they were retired, they did not feel qualified to rate programs,
or they were asked to rate programs in an area they felt was not appropriate given their field of
expertise.
2. This includes questionnaires completed by an individual other than the person sent the questionnaire.
