The following data was extracted from a National Research Council study titled Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States: Continuity and Change (Appendix Table F-2, pp. 135-136).


Total CS Faculty

  • Total number of CS faculty who were sent questionnaires: 432

    Full Professors

  • Full professors who were sent questionnaires: 235 (54% of Total Faculty)
    • Percentage of these professors who were recommended by the Institutional Coordinators and who returned usable questionnaires: 57%
    • Percentage of these professors who were drawn at random from faculty lists submitted by Institutional Coordinators and who returned usable questionnaires: 42%

    Associate Professors

  • Associate professors who were sent questionnaires: 103 (24% of Total Faculty)
    • Percentage of these professors who were recommended by the Institutional Coordinators and who returned usable questionnaires: 60%
    • Percentage of these professors who were drawn at random from faculty lists submitted by Institutional Coordinators and who returned usable questionnaires: 50%

    Assistant Professors

  • Assistant professors who were sent questionnaires: 88 (20% of Total Faculty)
    • Percentage of these professors who were recommended by the Institutional Coordinators and who returned usable questionnaires: 62%
    • Percentage of these professors who were drawn at random from faculty lists submitted by Institutional Coordinators and who returned usable questionnaires: 46%

    Other Staff

  • Other staff who were sent questionnaires: 6 (1% of Total Faculty)
