CRA Projects

In addition to the items listed on our events, data and resources, and publications pages, CRA has a number of ongoing projects:

  • Under a three-year, $6 million agreement with the NSF, CRA will create the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) to identify major research opportunities and establish “grand challenges” for the field. The CCC will create venues for community participation for developing visions and creating new research activities.

  • Awards
  • Research mentoring:
    • Distributed Mentor Project (DMP): matches outstanding female undergraduates with female mentors for a summer of research at the mentor's institution.
    • Canadian Distributed Mentor Project: similar to the original DMP program but aimed at Canadian students and faculty.
    • Collaborative Research Experience for Undergraduates (CREU) program which provides research experiences for groups of undergraduates from underrepresented groups during the academic year at their home institutions.
    • Cohort of Associate Professors Project (CAPP): aims to increase the percentage of Computer Science and Engineering (CS&E) women faculty with the rank of full professor by forming and mentoring a cohort of women from the associate professor ranks.
    • Grad Cohort for Women Program: workshops and other efforts to increase the ranks of senior women by building and mentoring nationwide cohorts of women through their graduate studies, as they make the transition from student to researcher.

  • Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC): works to increase the diversity of the computing research community by assessing needs and by developing and implementing programs to encourage and enhance minority participation in the computing research community. Co-sponsored by CRA, ACM, and IEEE-Computer Society.
  • CRA-Deans Group: aims to provide leadership and community to emerging and established colleges of computing and interdisciplinary "IT" schools.

  • Computing Research Advocacy Network (CRA-N): an electronic mailing list that delivers timely information about key advocacy opportunities. Each alert includes summary and background information, recommended actions, talking points, and contact information -- everything you need to make your voice heard in Washington.

  • Systers-Academia: a moderated electronic mailing list for graduate students and faculty women in Computer Science and Engineering.

  • CRA-W Cohort of Associate Professors Project (CAPP): aims to increase the percentage of Computer Science and Engineering women faculty with the rank of full professor by forming and mentoring a cohort of women from the associate professor ranks. The cornerstone of the CAPP is the involvement of 15 senior women, appointed as CRA-W Distinguished Professors, who will actively participate as role models, mentors, and advisers. The project will include an initial Professional Development Seminar, a series of smaller meetings in conjunction with technical conferences/seminars, and ongoing electronically-based support activities.
