WEBCAST OF SUPERCOMPUTING CONFERENCE (SC99) BEGINS TODAY

Several talks at the Supercomputing Conference (SC99) in Portland will be webcast. The conference deals with the science and application of high-performance computing and communications technology. The webcast will include talks by Vinton Cerf and Sun’s Greg Papadopoulos, as well as a keynote address by Donna Shirley, the former head of NASA’s Mars Exploration program. The webcast itself is a demonstration of the application of new technologies and approaches to the use of the Internet.

Information about SC99’s webcasts can be found on their website at http://www.sc99.org/webcasts/.

COMPUTER SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

Applications are due by December 1, 1999. The IEEE Computer Society’s CSIDC is a new system design competition for computer science and computer engineering undergraduate student teams. The goal of the contest, which has a $25,000 total first prize, is to advance excellence in computer design education. Teams of three to five undergraduate students should apply. Each team will receive the same kit of resources and a description of an existing situation that could be improved through technology. They then create a working model of a device to address the challenge. The CSIDC will culminate in an intensive three-day competition at the CSIDC World Finals in the Washington, DC area on June 25-27, 2000.

Complete details about the CSIDC can be found on the Computer Society’s website at http://computer.org/CSIDC.

CRA DISTRIBUTED MENTOR PROJECT

Applications are due by January 15, 2000. The objective of the CRA Distributed Mentor Project is to increase the number of women entering graduate school in Computer Science and Computer Engineering (CS&E). To achieve this, the project matches outstanding female undergraduates with female mentors for a summer of research at the mentor's institution. This research experience provides students with a window on research and graduate life and gives them a close mentoring relationship with a faculty researcher.

Complete information about the Project, including application materials for both students and mentors, can be found on CRA’s website at http://www.cra.org/Activities/craw/distmentor.
