CRA ACADEMIC CAREERS & EFFECTIVE TEACHING WORKSHOP, FEB. 4 - 6, 2001
CRA will hold another in its highly successful series of workshops for new faculty and advanced graduate students in computer science, computer engineering, computational science, and other computing-related disciplines. The workshop focuses on practical methods for having a successful and fulfilling academic career. It will include talks by senior members of the two largest funding agencies for computing research, NSF and DARPA, providing overviews of the agencies' operations and funding programs. There will also be a workshop led by NSF staff on how to write a good funding proposal. In addition, a joint reception is planned with CRA board members and attendees of the CRA Computing Leadership Summit that will provide workshop participants an opportunity to meet informally with senior leaders from the computing community. Within the next few weeks, CRA expects to hear whether it will be able to provide funding assistance for graduate students to attend the workshop.
The workshop will be held in Arlington, Virginia (Washington, D.C.-area). For more information, visit the CRA website at www.cra.org/Activities/workshops/2001/home.html
2001-2002 FELLOWSHIPS FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING
1) The Computational Science Graduate Fellowship program is designed to support students pursuing graduate study at U.S. universities who are studying scientific or engineering disciplines with applications in high performance computing. Fellows also participate in research at a DOE laboratory. The program offers a $21,600 annual stipend and payment of tuition and fees. The deadline for applications is January 24, 2001. 2) The Department of Energy High-Performance Computer Science Fellowship program is designed to support students pursuing graduate study at U.S. universities in computer science specializing in high-performance computing. Fellows also participate in research at Los Alamos National Laboratory or Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The program offers a $24,000 annual stipend and payment of tuition and fees. The deadline for applications is February 12, 2001.
The fellowships are administered by the Krell Institute. For information on the Computational Science Graduate Fellowship, visit www.krellinst.org/CSGF/CSGF.html. For information on the Department of Energy High-Performance Computer Science Fellowship, visit www.krellinst.org/DOE_HPCS/DOE_HPCS.html
NSF FEDERAL CYBER SERVICE: SCHOLARSHIP FOR SERVICE (SFS)
The SFS Program is designed to build capacity in information assurance/computer security education and to prepare students for the information assurance workforce. The program has three tracks, a Scholarship Track, a Capacity Building- Faculty Development Track, and a Capacity Building - Institutional Development Track. The Scholarship Track provides funding to institutions with CAE/IAE certified programs or equivalent for scholarships for a cadre of students in the last two years of their information assurance programs. These students enter the Federal Cyber Service upon graduation. The Faculty Development Track provides funds for faculty development in the area of information assurance and computer security. The Institutional Development Track provides funds for institutional development in the target areas.
Formal proposals in all three tracks are due on January 24, 2001. For more information, visit the NSF website at www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin/getpub?nsf0111
