Let’s Get Physical / Real

• Drive software-based processing closer to the physical phenomena, i.e., the sensors and transducers
• Drive bulk of applications towards on-line / real-time operation
• Explore and empower alternative platforms, e.g., embedded processors, smart cards, etc. (The other 98% of processors!)
• Not just about the nuts and bolts -- Lots of work to be done at “upper” levels, including information management, HCI, etc.
• Strong coupling of “upper” and “lower” layer software through adaptive, feedback-intensive designs
