admitted students, exposes them to stigma/failure.

• Summer orientation programs that focus on

confidence-building, but not entry-level knowledge and

skills, nor a departmental support system increases

risk of failure.

• Lack of structural coherence undermines institutional

minority recruitment efforts.

• Ill-conceived or poorly run academic programs can

contribute to the difficulties of the people they are

intended to serve.
