• National Science Foundation (NSF) Home Page. The center of government funded research in the USA.
  
  
• NSF Computer and Information Sciences (CISE) Directorate. Here is where most of the NSF computer science funding comes from.
  
  
• The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The other biggest funder of CS related research in the federal government.
  
  
• Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility. Organization concerned with social/ethical implications of computer technology.
  
  
• The Electronic Frontier Foundation. This group keeps tabs on various information technology issues concerning individual liberties vs. government and corporate interests. Somewhat pro-individual liberty slant.
  
  
• Project Gutenberg. A project to provide publicly available digital text for manuscripts in the public domain. Currently about 5000 books, with heavy emphasis on classics. If you want text, here it is.
  
  
• RSA Labs Research branch of one of the world's premier information security outfits. Their FAQ page has all sorts of interesting information on it.
