Women often find themselves a minority in their own departments or research unit, typically have few female colleagues and role models, and may be concerned about their potential for success. CRA-W-sponsored Career Mentoring Workshops (CMW) bring junior researchers and educators together with women already established in their fields. The established professionals provide practical information, advice, and support to their younger colleagues. Workshops are generally co-located with major professional meetings, providing many attendees with the opportunity to attend technical talks and make contacts in their research areas.

Career Mentoring Workshops are organized into three tracks, to better serve the needs of different groups of early-career researchers. The CMW-R track targets female junior faculty in research universities and senior PhD students interested in research faculty positions. The CMW-E track targets female junior faculty in teaching colleges and senior PhD students interested in undergraduate education. The CMW-L track serves female researchers in industry and government research labs, and senior graduate students interested in research lab positions.

CMW-R and CMW-L Workshops are held in association with major conferences. Past workshops have been co-located with the FCRC and Supercomputing conferences. The next workshop will take place July 11-12, 2009 in Pasadena, CA, in association with IJCAI 2009. More information about the workshop will be coming soon.

CMW-E Workshops are held in association with SIGSCE, ACM's Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education. The last workshop took place March 4, 2009 in Chattanooga, TN, in association with SIGCSE 2009. More information about the workshop can be found here.

The CRA-W has also compiled a booklet summarizing the content covered over the first decade of Career Mentoring Workshops (1991-1999). While some of the information may be a bit dated, most of the material and advice is still relevant.
